Vienna Gum Recession Treatment
The Chao Pinhole®
Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue pulls away to expose more of the tooth enamel or the tooth’s root. It’s a common problem that often goes unnoticed -- but its treatment is necessary to prevent tooth sensitivity, bone loss around the teeth, and eventual tooth loss. Dr. Hisham Barakat is one of seven Board Certified Implantologists in the state of Virginia and one of four Virginian dentists who specializes in The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST), a scalpel-free, suture-free procedure for correcting gum recession. About Gum Recession
Gum recession can occur due to aggressive brushing, tobacco use, gum disease, or as a natural side effect of aging. You may notice your gums have pulled away from their normal location, causing increased sensitivity due to the tooth root’s exposure. You may also feel a notch between the gum and the crown of the tooth when recession has occurred. Healthy gums are an essential part of a healthy mouth -- and left untreated, gum recession can lead to bacteria buildup that may result in eventual tooth loss.
How the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique Works
There are a number of treatments available for gum recession, but most involve the use of invasive scalpels and sutures. The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique is a nonsurgical technique that works sort of like a needle and thread to pull gum tissue back to its original position. First a small hole is opened in the area where recession has occurred -- then special instruments are inserted to gently pull the gum down, covering the exposed root and reversing gum recession.
As one of only four dentists certified to perform the procedure in our state, Dr. Barakat is exceptionally qualified to perform the Pinhole Surgical Technique in Vienna.
Benefits of the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique
The benefits of this nonsurgical treatment for patients suffering from gum recession are many. They include:
- No cutting or stitching required
- No need to remove existing tissue from elsewhere in the mouth (as with gum grafting procedures)
- Minimal postoperative symptoms
- Far less pain, swelling, and tenderness than surgical methods
- Almost instant, natural-looking results
Gum recession also causes the teeth to appear longer than they should, a side effect many patients find unsightly. By pulling the gum line back to where it once was, the Pinhole Surgical Technique provides rapid cosmetic improvements, too.
